Meet Our Founder
In the landscape of Malaysian elder care, St. Mary’s Aged Home stands as a beacon of compassion and dignity. Its story is intrinsically woven with the vision, resilience, and unwavering dedication of its founder, Mdm Sonia, whose profound personal journey transformed a pressing societal need into a sanctuary for countless elderly lives.
Mdm Sonia’s calling was rooted in both skill and heart. A qualified nurse who completed her training in the historic city of Bath, UK, she returned to Southeast Asia with a strong professional foundation. She served with distinction as a nurse and later as a matron in several hospitals across Malaysia and Singapore, developing the clinical expertise and deep empathy that would define her life’s work. However, her path took a tragic turn with the sudden passing of her husband when she was merely 31, leaving her a single mother to two young boys. It was from this place of personal loss and responsibility that her greater mission would unexpectedly grow.
Overcoming Challanges
Driven by her faith and a firsthand understanding of care, Mdm Sonia was moved by the plight of destitute and abandoned elders she encountered in her community. In 1985, amidst her own challenges, she transformed personal grief into collective solace. With courageous determination, she started what was then called St. Mary’s Nursing Home from humble beginnings in a garage which was transformed to cater to a nursing home need in Section 12, Petaling Jaya (PJ). With growing needs of the elderly, Mdm. Sonia then moved her operations to a shop lot in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. These modest spaces became the pioneering refuge, where Mdm Sonia, balancing motherhood and mission, personally attended to the residents, embodying the home’s ethos of family-like care.
Steadfast Leadership
Her perseverance bore fruit when she successfully secured a permanent and larger property at Old Klang Road (Jalan Klang Lama) Kuala Lumpur. This address would become the heart of the operation, a home she nurtured into a thriving centre of care that remains in operation to this day. The “Nursing Home” in its original name reflected her professional background and the initial focus on essential medical and personal care for the frail. Under her steadfast leadership, the home relied on community donations and volunteer support, growing in reputation as a place of unconditional love and dignity for all, regardless of race or religion.
Growth & Vision
As the home evolved, so did its name and scope, transitioning naturally to St. Mary’s Aged Home to reflect a more holistic model of elder well-being. Recognizing the growing need in Malaysia’s ageing population, Mdm Sonia’s vision expanded beyond a single location. Under her guidance, and continuing her legacy, St. Mary’s opened several other branches in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, each adhering to her founding principle of providing compassionate, inexpensive care to those in need, ensuring her mission reached more of the nation’s forgotten elderly.
